Edwin and I got up early this morning so we could make our way to Quetzaltenango which is the second largest city in Guatemala and also close to the base of Tajumulco volcano, the highest peak in the country; this is what Edwin and I are going to hike up in the next couple of days.
We checked out of the guesthouse and hopped on a ‘chicken bus’ that took us an hour and a half around the lake where we boarded another bus to get us to Quetzaltenago (also called Xela).
We arrived in the early afternoon where we found a cheap guesthouse and checked out the town… there were a lot of markets about but not most of the shops were closed because it was Boxing Day.
The hike up the volcano tomorrow will be cold so we found a market selling cheap secondhand clothes and I went all out and spent the equivalent of $1.25 for some warm socks, gloves and a pair of fleece tracksuit trousers.
Dinner was delicious that we bought at another market and we also gathered some food from the supermarket for the hike tomorrow.
