03/09/2010 Day 3 Vancouver to Mexico

Distance Travelled: From Deception pass to 1 mile past Hwy 116 travelling on highway 19. roughly 65km

Money Spent: $7.00 – Ferry ticket, photocopying of a map and some vegetables.

Having no troubles having slept where I did I packet up my things and headed back on Hwy 20 to go see Deception Pass, it certainly was worth the cycle in the wrong direction.

This is where I ate breakfast and enjoyed the view for an hour or so watching the sun rise.

Every now and again I pull out my compass just to check whether I’m going in the right direction, but for some reason its off by about 90 degrees, it’s a real good thing I’m not relying on it.

I cycled to Oak Harbor where I quickly passed through the town to access scenic heights road taking me along the coast to Coupeville. The view was nice but the terrain was hilly and at some points really steep.

When I arrived at Coupeville I used the internet at the library for a good hour sorting out this blog and sending a few emails. Just as I was leaving I met a German couple who had cycled the route I’m taking in the opposite direction, their bikes were pimped and they only had a few days to go to get to Vancouver. They mentioned some good spots to camp and let me photocopy their bicycle route map.

I left to catch the 3 o’clock ferry from Fort Casey to Port Townsend; unfortunately I was running late and missed it by 15 minutes so I had to wait an hour for the next one.

This is when I met a gay couple who were in the army… lets just say it was easy to tell who the dominant one was, nice guys though.

In Port Townsend i stopped off at a Safeway to pick up some vegetables because I hadn’t eaten any fresh produce since arriving in the States. Whilst outside I met a woman who had hand built with her husband an electric hybrid tricycle from the spare parts of an exercise machine, electric motor and parts from bicycles. It was wicked; it ran on 48V, had double A-frame suspension like an F1 car and looked well comfy as you sat down on a leather chair. I should have taken a picture of it, shame.

Anyways, I cycled on, hitting up a gravel bike path going alongside hwy 19 before having to join the hwy. It was a good few miles till the camping ground that the German couple had recommended because it was closed and of course worked out to be free.

I first off cooked a very filling meal, pasta carbonara and corn then banana pudding for desert… its great all my meals are pretty much – just add water, and for the things that need milk, I have milk powder – just add this and more water.

I met Stu an old guy who ran the food bank next door to the camping ground; he invited me to go see him tomorrow morning. To be honest I have no idea what happens at a food bank but I’m sure I’ll find out tomorrow.

Another passerby Bob who was out walking his dog got chatting to me for a while and he even offered me to have a shower at his place around the corner… he seemed a bit creepy so I gratefully refused although it would have been nice to wash the sweat off.

Bob also said the weather is going to be awful for the next few days…I’m not sure what im going to do, cycle in the rain or just take it easy and chill waiting for the rain to pass, its not like I have to pay for the accommodation.
