07/09/2010 Day 7 Vancouver to Mexico

Distance Travelled: Hewitt Rd to Toutle River RV Park Resort 50km

Money Spent: $4 – common munchables and snacks

Woke up at 9am to take a shit in the bushes and to have a shower using the collected rain water in the pine trees by shaking them, it was cold, but certainly what was needed; man this swimming in the deep end.

It was overcast and miserable most of the day but the peaches I bought on the side of the road made the days cycle worthwhile (I don’t need much pleasing) as they were so good, I don’t know what they do to the fruit here but my god they are tasty.

I wanted to cover some decent ground today but I stopped at a RV park to see whether I could have a proper, warm shower, and boy it awesome. It didn’t cost anything and either did the wireless internet, I laid out all my damp camping gear on the terrace for them to dry under the patchy dark grey clouds and caught up on all the geekiness goodness that I like so much, including updating this blog; I got so caught up with internet related things (not porn) I lost track of time, several hours had passed and it had started raining. I got chatting to Scott who worked the reception and he said I could camp on the site for free, normally costing $45. Thanks dude.

I was going to follow the bicycle route map to Astoria tomorrow but instead I’m now going to head for Portland because I’ve always heard good things about that city. I emailed a few people on couch-surfers, for those who don’t know couch surfing is its a website where you sign up like facebook, making a profile that basically enables you to contact the 2 million people who have signed up on it to see if you can crash on their couch. It’s free and you get to meet likeminded people.

I spent the evening chatting to Scott and Ron (a friend of Scotts) about my travels and encouraged them to drop their commitments and do what I do and travel the world also giving them advice on how to save money i.e. bicycling.
