29/09/2010 Day 29 Vancouver to Mexico

Distance Travelled: Manchester State Park CG to Bolega Bay CG 75 Miles (120km)

Money Spent: $1 for Candy, $1.29 for a corndog, $2 for ½ a dozen eggs and $3 for a few beers

Time cycling: 5 Hours 30 minutes

Total Distance Traveled: 1881km

Yesterday I was told that the camping ground host does his early rounds to catch people who hadn’t paid for the nights stay in the campground; thankfully I was up early enough to avoid him by leaving the grounds as soon as I could, although if I was only a minute later he would have caught me.

Jeff and I had breakfast down at the car park leading to the beach down the road from the campsite, it really wasn’t much like my usual breakfast meal, clam chowder pasta with New York style sausages that I had bought the ingredients for dinner yesterday but did not eat, it was a good filling meal as today the road took us 70 miles to Bolega Bay.

Down the road we met some other cyclists Davis and Martha and they were cool people from America, they met somewhere in Oregon doing the same route as Jeff and I and as they were headed in the same direction as us we joined them for the day.

Highway 1 today was quite tedious too with some hard going uphill sections but we all managed the climbs with Davis and myself leading the group.

We stopped for lunch at Stewarts Point where another touring cyclist couple joined us for the break; they were from Germany like a lot of the touring cyclists you meet doing this route.

We pushed on up a steep incline following the coast up a hill reaching 1000 feet.

The views were great and the downhill sections were good fun going full pelt around the hairpin turns.

Finally after a hard day’s cycle we made it to the campground where we met another German couple who joined us for drinks and our dinners, as we all cooked our own separate meals.

We stayed up till 10 (Way past my bed time) drinking and having a good time before being surrounded with raccoons wanting to steal our leftovers; these raccoons are scary animals for example when shining light into the distance surrounding our camp and seeing their eyes light up… creepy. Lets hope they don’t bother me during the night.
