30/09/2010 Day 30 Vancouver to Mexico

Distance Travelled: Bolega Bay CG to Olema Campground 38 Miles (60km)

Money Spent: $3 for hot chocolate and internet, $2 for bread and $2.60 for a chili con carne for dinner

Time cycling: 3 Hours

Total Distance Traveled: 1941km

We had a bit of a delayed start to the day, we didn’t leave the campground till around 11. Davis and Martha headed off early as they wanted to be in San Fran by this evening, hopefully I can catch up with Martha when I’m there as she really was a cool chick.

I needed to check out some stuff on the internet so I found a café where I then found out that Mohammad the guy who was suppose to host me for the time I spend in San fran cant help me out for the weekend. I then had to look for another host, checking out the warm showers list. Warm-showers is much like couch surfing but directed more at touring cyclists. Thankfully after a little while of searching I was able to find a place to stay with a girl called Cyndi using Skype to contact her. God bless the internet.

Whilst on the internet the German couple (Bernt and Selke) and Jeff went on ahead but I would catch up with them in the next town. On the way I happen to get my first problem with my bike. Keep in mind I haven’t had any problems with it over the past 1900km and all I got was a flat tire, but having to use primitive tools to remove the tube to patch it up was a bit of a challenge but ir was all good as I was able to repair the problem.

Further down the road and after catching up with the rest of the guys I briefly met some Swiss German touring cyclists, during the few minutes I was talking to them I they almost slapped a bible in my face telling me I should read it, this not being the first time since arriving in America… I politely refused the offer and soon after went on my way.

One of the stops along the way was at Hog Island where there was an oyster farm. I now after trying these have a new found love for oysters and I got Bernt involved with trying them out, he didn’t want to at first and actually liked them whist Jeff and Selke refused the slimy things. Scott the owner of the shop who was a very generous guy offered the 2 of us plenty of sample oysters that were so delicious and will and would highly recommend.

Bernt has had a bit of an issue with his rear tire that over the past few days has continuously punctured itself because of the wheel being now oval shaped, Jeff helped out by replacing the tire but he needed to purchase a tire to replace Jeff’s. It was getting close to 5 pm and because I was a much faster cyclist I hopped on ahead to keep the bike store open in Point Reyes before it closed. Bernt and Selke were happy I did this and paid for some beer and the cost of the accommodation for my effort… I like to keep people happy.

We cooked up some dinner, I had chili con carne with mash potatoes, drank some booze and chatted with our neighbours Gary and Pam.

I thought it was a little weird that after introducing themselves, the first question they asked us was what we thought of Obama. I don’t care much about politics but I have found with a lot of Americans politics is a big issue and seems to be a main topic of conversation.

Oysters! Amazingly tasty
